Recently, Surabaya has been receiving an increasing amount of attention from international researchers as well as numerous institutions that focuses on urban environment. As we can see from events such as UN-Habitat Prepcom and Europalia that had chosen Surabaya as their venue and theme. It proves to be a very opportune moment for Surabaya citizens to re-discover local urban knowledges and to learn about latest social issues from their immediate surroundings. 

Through Urban Literacy conference, we aim to spark discourse on alternative approaches to education and pedagogy, especially the ones that value the environment as the source of knowledges. We look forward to gather urban activists, artist, and public intellectuals from diverse backgrounds to exchange valuable informations based on each of our latest actions. From the discussion, we hope to construct new understanding on urban pedagogy and provide supportive ideas for its development.

Overview: 
The conference will be held in two days. The first day consists of panel lectures and discussions conducted in Unair. The second day is an excursion session for the invitee and participants to visit Rusun Sombo, Plemahan, Pandegiling, and then finish in C2O gallery to participate in Shinya Akutagawa’s art exhibition on Rawon.
