Alter-Shelter 7: Entangled Distances

The theme, “Entangled Distances” is chosen to elaborate the idea of distance which has been redefined under the covid-19 pandemic. “Social-distance” was strictly implemented and we followed it without thorough understanding, as it was augmented and solidified by our fear of the invisible. In it, we have been experiencing contactless online communication as a new form of life-style and it is shaking the sense and value of “distance”.

This moment serves as the opportunity to generate new meaning of what is a region or what is a city. Alter-Shelter 7 is strongly interested in the impact and consequences of the fluster on distance.

In our workshop, participants will conduct intensive fieldwork within urban settlements (Kampung) in Surabaya, in order to learn living knowledge of “distance” which has been cultivated and embedded in the residents and community, and also to discover signs of new knowledge and technique to survive in the era of “entangled distance”. Participants will comprehensively operate their own urban studies, but they will also have chances to have lecture, mentoring, presentation and review, and discussion conducted by mentors from diverse creative fields based on art and urbanism. As a result of the workshop, participants are asked to develop and produce “alternative public media” which could introduce their findings, analysis and suggestions.

Alter-Shelter is an interdisciplinary action-research activity to cultivate socio-spatial ingenuities found in Surabaya kampungs. It is held annually in various urban settlements. Through one week intensive workshop, participants are given the opportunity to mingle with the community and produce creative responses towards phenomenon found in the field.

Participants from diverse backgrounds and nationalities are required to explore the kampung spontaneously following the interest of each individual. Re-evaluating daily phenomenon, and discovering hidden facts and narratives. The findings are then developed into visual art projects to be presented back to the public.
